Brave men, who lent their loyal name
and rallied round to swell the ranks.
No glory, no empty fame,
but worthy of our grateful thanks.

These souls, who gave their youth for us
and counted neither precious life,
nor limb, nor ever made a fuss
at leaving family or wife.

Those names, that once I never knew,
lie buried under foreign stone.
While I, one of the lucky few,
found safe passage back to my home.
