Fred was born in a Gypsy caravan,
in the middle o' Broughton Wood.
He never did go to any school,
but his Mam brought him up real good.

Fred went to church every Sunday,
an' folk would go sneer and nudge.
Some winked, even whispering to each other,
while others said, "Who are we to judge?"

Some argued that a painted wooden box,
that traveled round the country on wheels,
Should be banned from the shores of England
an' especially them Gypsies, as steals.

Then Adolf Hitler took control,
of all the (down trodden) Deutsches Folk.
That's when the manure hit the fan,
and Britain almost went broke.

Rommel then invaded the desert,
but after being chased into the sea.
A lot o' our Tommies got medals,
and some actually got the V.C.

Fred never got to wear his V.C.
he was killed while carrying a mate.
He carried his mate to safety,
but for Fred it was already too late.

Fred was born in a Gipsy caravan,
in the middle o' Broughton wood,
But now the folk who once knew him,
would have him back if they could.

In Broughton Woods a caravan is rotting,
time is ever relentless with it's chore.
The caravan is surrounded by flowers,
and a V.C. is framed under glass on the door.
