The Scheme

'Twas a filthy night in October
When HQ planned the "SCHEME,"
"Wait till it's wet and windy,
Then soak them!" was the theme.

The DI boldly set forth
Armed with pots and pans,
Rum and Soup and Compo
And cream for softening hands.

See through the Stygian darkness
A precariously perched CP,
Where the 'Planners', bonfire blazing,
Kept busy drinking tea.

High around the hilltops
Trudging grimly on,
The Patrols kept plodding forward,
Though the night had just begun.

Contact from the Radios
Went whistling with the wind,
The MTO was hiding
From murder, death and din.

And as the mist grew thicker
And the torrents slanted down,
We said a prayer for PRONTO
To guide us back to town.

Alas, our hopes were shattered,
For compasses were wrong,
And though we nearly got them
One-sixth of us were DROWNED.
